A Seamless Integration of Air-Cooled and Liquid-Cooled Designs

Rapid advancement in artificial intelligence (AI) technology are driving the expansion of high-performance computing into more complex applications. Heat management and energy efficiency have become top priorities for data centers and server services. Air-cooled solutions are increasingly being adopted to address these challenges. Liquid-cooled systems, liquid cold plates for example, are increasingly being developed to effectively manage the substantial heat generated by next-generation technologies in the future. Rack system, which includes servers, swifts, and power supply units (PSUs), combines several high-performance fans and liquid-cooled modules to efficiently dissipate heat within the rack. Taking an NVL-72 AI server as an example, in addition to deploying liquid cold plates, the system employs over 250 fans in the rack, and a fan wall of the AALC sidecar for rack cooling is used to cool down the warm water in the liquid cooling system, with the cooled water returning to the system and being reused.

Modern Air-to-liquid Design Effectively Addresses the Global Demand for AI Data Centers
SUNON AI Fan Series combines exceptional thermal efficiency with specialized liquid-cooled solutions, including direct-to-chip designs and the AALC Sidecar system, to meet the demands of large-scale, high-performance computing and sustainability in modern data center environments. These AI fans feature dynamic electrical flow monitoring and braking protections, allowing them to rapidly and continuously dissipate heat from chips and systems while AI servers are under heavy workloads. SUNON AI fans are widely chosen for use in contemporary server equipment by data centers and cloud service providers (CSPs) worldwide. For example, a prominent American multinational information technology corporation employs at least 60 SUNON VG-series fans in each edge-to-cloud computing application, while a Taiwanese computer hardware manufacturer utilizes the same fan series for GPU cooling. Additionally, the SUNON Ultra XG fan series is designed as a 4-in-row fan tray solution for CSP clients' 1U servers. Notably, the XG series is the first cooling fan option supplied to NVIDIA for the GB200.

Optimal Design of Fans: Enhanced Flow Field and Improved Thermal Efficiency
SUNON AI fan series features a high-speed dual fan with an optimized design and flow field, resulting in robust airflow and up to a 50% increase in fan efficiency. The ideal combination of a 7-blade inlet fan, a 5-blade outlet fan, and a stator fan enhances airflow diversion and reduces wind shear due to the smoothness of the flow field. Additionally, custom-designed split winglets on the fan impellers improve airflow and static pressure while minimizing eddy flow and resistance. Overall, this design effectively dissipate chip heat, reducing heat accumulation and allowing the server system to operate at optimal temperatures below 90℃.

SUNON Files Patents for Innovative Fan Control Technologies to Ensure Continuous Cooling
Monitoring variations in electrical flow and implementing power-saving techniques are essential for effective server operation and thermal management. SUNON AI fans provide a real-time electrical flow monitoring function, utilizing an advanced microcontroller (MCU) to generate dynamic records. This capability not only enhances thermal efficiency and facilitates power-saving modifications but also ensures high performance and stable server operation. Additionally, the fans incorporate an innovative patented technology: power-off motor brake control (no. I689150). This technology can detect surges and preemptively halt fan operation to prevent damage, resulting a 200% reduction in the time and energy required for braking. Furthermore, the AI fan series includes features such as hot swap, redundancy, and soft start, allowing main and auxiliary fans to operate interchangeably while extending service life to meet the demands of intensive and uninterrupted computing in server applications.

SUNON is actively developing liquid cooling solutions for AI server applications. In addition to enhancing thermal fan technology to meet the demands of modern servers, we are investing in the research and development of liquid cooling systems, including the AALC Sidecar, RPU, and CDU. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive range of total thermal solutions for contemporary data centers that effectively address the root causes of the heat generation. SUNON’s total thermal solutions not only enhance server processing power and reduce Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) in data centers but also align with our clients’ sustainability objectives.
